(More customer reviews)This book tells you the history about the F/A-18 Hornet, the book tells you the story of the start of the lightweight fighter competition between the F-16 & YF-17 but the USAF rejected the YF-17. Later on, the USN wanted a lightweight fighter to replace the F-4 & A-6, so the USN & McDonnell Douglas(Now Boeing) went on to design a new plane. The F/A-18 went into services with the USN in the late 70s & early 80s & also shows the Hornet's first sting at Libya. The early production of the Hornet was the A/B model but was replaced by the more improved C/D model. The book also tells you about the Hornets during the Desert Storm which has the highest survivalbility among others jet fighter & how flexible the plane is, eg. like the Hornet shot down 2 enemy MIG-21s when it was on its way on a bombing mission without having to jettision their bomb load & shows how maneuveble the Hornet is. Let us not forget that USN & USMC Hornets participated in Operation Allied Force in 1999. This book also include foreign countries that operate the F/A-18 Hornet & the new devolopment on the E/F model which is call the Super Hornet. Finally, it also shows you all the electronic systems on board the Hornet & the sensors & weapons that are in use with the Hornet. This book also contain good pictures also but it is in black & white but the amazing story will make you like the book.

(More customer reviews)Anyone familiar with the history of the B-17 and, in particular, the Eighth Air Force, knows the name of Roger Freeman. Author of the reknowned series beginning with "The Mighty Eighth", Freeman and co-author David Osborne assembled a new volume entitled "The B-17 Flying Fortress Story." This new book fills a gap in the literature about the Flying Fortress. The first quarter of the book covers the type in general, from initial design through production and modifications. Included here are excerpts from technical orders and operating manuals. Also included are a selection of somewhat rare photos and a special section on the Wright R-1820 engine. Of greater significance to the student of the B-17, however, are the last three quarters of the book. This section provides individual aircraft histories for each of the 12,700-odd B-17s produced by the consortium of Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed between 1935 and 1945. This massive undertaking was apparently performed by Osborne reviewing each of the individual military record cards available and tying that information to other available sources. Thus, having the military serial of a particular B-17 (say, for example, from a photograph) enables a reader to see where that aircraft came from and its eventual disposition. The information is, by necessity, brief but usually contains specifics on an aircraft if it was lost in action. There are a few noted errors, surpisingly, for those B-17s which survived to enjoy civil service as that information is available elswhere in detailed form. Other editing errors (i.e. the book refers to the `Reclamation Finance Centre' (RFC) vs. the actual `Reconstruction Finance Corporation') may appear but such minor things can be overlooked in such a gigantic effort.

I have found the book to be very useful and really like the power of using Tool-Object-Product modeling along with the standard techniques. I believe I've built a solid knowledge of how to define a system's functions and then apply classical TRIZ tools. What I've liked about the TOP-TRIZ methodology as described in this book is that I feel that it will allow me to use the foundation of TRIZ that I've built and now apply it in a more practical and efficient way. I have especially appreciated the improvements on Su-F analysis and the 76 standard solutions provided by the use of the flow chart, TOP modeling and the Standard Techniques. I find the flow chart that is printed on each of the divider tab pages at the beginning of each section to be very useful in understanding the systematic flow of the technique.

Captain "Ike" wrote this book like he flew the private $3.7 million Boeing 707 with proficiency, adventure and accuracy. "Ike" put on the plane like a pair of tailored pants, he and the Boeing became one and together they set records that still stand today. Like a swashbuckling buccaneer he is the only pilot in history to purposely "roll" a 707 twice in a maneuver with (now) King Juan Carlos of Spain watching. They solidified their friendship in the cockpit of the 707.
"Ike" named the Boeing "The Silver Phyllis" and even the name has a story involved. This brave pilot and fine author was asked to land at airports that others were afraid to land in such large planes, thereby certifying the airport for service for the larger aircraft.
In the days of the presidency of Richard Nixon and shady characters like Bebe Rebozo, a Tampa Banker, Robert Vesco owned politicians and controlled countries. That whole world started to unravel in March 1973 for Vesco when many of his inner circle testified in front of a grand jury in New York city and Vesco fled in his Boeing.
Supported by Costa Rican leaders and even Fidel Castro of Cuba, Vesco was insulated from the jurisdiction of American courts.
In 1995 Castro threw Vesco in Jail and the "fugitive financier" vanished. However, the Silver Phyliss was hidden and Captain Ike Eisenhauer was contracted by the United States government to find the Boeing and return it to the United Sates by "hook or crook."
Like an undercover agent, a spy, and a swashbuckling buccaneer "Ike" found the airplane and like Mr. Phelps of Mission Impossible, formulated a plan and executed it, to finally recover the multi-million Boeing 707.
This book is a fantastic read. I was on the edge of my seat and turning the pages while I devoured this book. Unlike most books that slow down from time to time, this book keeps moving and I hated to see it end.

Since the "Republican-bashing" attitude was so manifest in the authors' writings, it would be virtually useless as a resource in debates with fellow-Republicans. Very disappointing.
