My father used to tell me his war day flying stories when I was a teenager back in the late 1960's. I kept encouraging him to write a book because his war experiences flying in the South Pacific in the flying boats was unique. I knew history when I heard it.
This book would better be titled, "From a DC-3 to a DC-10. The flying career of Jerry Fay". Born in 1920 and a pilot at 16 years of age in 1936 made him the perfect age to experience World War 2. He writes an excellent historical document of what it was like to be a flight engineer on flying machines that needed his skills as a mechanic to keep those machines in the air. He writes of maintaining engines while in flight!
Not just World War 2 experiences will you find here. He tells of flying the AT6, Stearman, Ryans, DC-3's, Constellation, the 720, 727, and DC-10 among others. His descriptions of the early days of flying in Alaska are excellent. It is amazing to read the descriptions of those early days in Alaska.
This book, from a -3 to a -10 is an historical document of the pilots and their flying machines from 1936 to 1985. Pat Fay
