(More customer reviews)The Art of Business Warfare compares for the reader business and military tactics, with the author making a substantial case that various military tactics can be employed, and have been employed, to successfully market business ideas and products. That it does so in a highly entertaining and artful manner is a delightful surprise. Mr. Leppanen uses actual military case histories to first explain how military tactics either won or lost the day on the battle field. He then analyzes analogous scenarios that have taken place within the confines of business/corporate structures. In each instance, the business scenarios can be deconstructed using military strategems. In some cases, marketers used similar techniques effectively, giving their products the correct impetus to make them attractive to consumers. In other cases, it is shown that a focus on military strategies could have saved a product from an eventual demise. The stories themselves are very interesting explorations into why something worked beautifully or why a particular strategy failed miserably. Corporate power structures are compared with military hierarchies (i.e. Generals (military) are analogous to CEOs (business)). Battlefield deployments are shown to be similar to corporate forays into the marketplace. Also, each chapter ends with a concise explanation and review of that chapter's main theses.
The book is succinct in its study and a generally fun read. In some instances, the comparison stories are so interesting and thought provoking that one might beg the question: "Why wasn't this book written much earlier?" as a way to help those poor marketers who failed to overcome marketplace vagaries. Overall, Mr. Leppanen has certainly conjured a timely and effective tool for better establishing and maintaining a toehold on consumer choice. An exceptional book!

Business and warfare have more in common that most people think. The Art of Business Warfare applies military techniques to the business world. It outlines how businesses can use the military principles preemption, dislocation, and disruption to outmaneuver their competition. In addition, before conducting an operation, the military has four primary areas it must address: personnel, intelligence, operations, and logistics. Companies must also manage these four areas. While The Art of Business Warfare won't show you how to call in artillery fire on your competition, it will show you how to coordinate you business departments and improve your business operations.
