(More customer reviews)If you love airplanes of all sorts and you're idea of fun is going to an airport and watching them take off and land this is one book you're going to love. It all started in 1903 with Orville and Wilbur Wright when they "built the first engine-powered airplane that could fly." Airplanes have come a long way from that time. The are larger, carry passengers and can fly very long distances. For example, the Airbus A380 is the "biggest passenger plane in the world." It can hold an amazing 840 passengers . . . it's "freaky big!" Although the Airbus A380 is BIG, it isn't the largest. The largest aircraft is the Antonov An-225. It is 275 feet, 7 inches long. It can carry massive loads. For example it can carry the weight equivalent of "40 big elephants." Now that is really freaky!
In this book you can look at and learn a lot about some big freaky aircraft. How about the C-5 Galaxy. This plane transports military equipment around the world. It is so big it can carry "army trucks, helicopters, or small planes." The Airbus Beluga was once called the "Super Transporter," but the nickname Beluga stuck. It is also a large transport plane. The Boeing 747-400 was nicknamed the "jumbo jet." and can hold 420 passengers. It's tail alone is "taller than a six-story building." In this book you'll also get to take a look at a Boeing Dreamlifter, a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a B-52 Bomber, and a Water Bomber. You can take a peek at four more large aircrafts such as the Sikorsky Ch53E Super Stallion, the Boeing Delta 4-Heavy rocket, the Airship Ventures Zeppelin and a commercial satellite.
This book really is fun, freaky and sure to please the young airplane fanatic. Each section gives the dimensions of the planes, talks about its basic history and purpose and has some WOW photographs to pore over. This book is very well laid out and will fascinate even the most reluctant reader. In the back of the book is a picture glossary, an index, a bibliography, and additional recommended book and website resources (thorough Bearport). This book would be a nice stepping stone for a student to develop a report on aeronautics or simply a fun, freaky read!
