This is the best "Airplane Book" to come along in a very long time. Speaking as the widow of a pilot, I can tell you that he would have been thrilled with this book. The information and pictures are outstanding. It's the perfect Christmas, Birthday, Father's/Mother's Day or any other day gift that you can give a pilot or anyone interested in aviation. Ray Wagner is a legend in aviation and put an amazing collection of photos with all the information about them together. Jack Bacon is also an outstanding publisher who has an impressive list of books published by his company. I'd give this book 10 stars if I could or more! I guarantee you will enjoy this book if you like planes at all. L. Wicksten, Sparks/Reno, Nevada

The most authoritative and comprehensive history ofAmerica's military aircraft ever published. From World War I to Iraq.Profusely illustrated with over 1700 photographs. Each plane arranged by fighting purposeand appearance in history.Vital facts on every plane - how powerful, how big, how heavyhow fast, how high, and how far.American Combat Planes of the 20th Century is the only complete reference to all the airplanes that created American airpower. It tells the story of the marriage between aircraft and war. Every combat type built in the United States for the Air Force, Navy, or for foreign governments, is included, together with foreign aircraft bought for American fighting units. American Combat Planes of 20th Century is 758 pages, hardcover, printed on high quality coated stock, with a section of color photographs showing the history of military airplane color configurations. All the planes designed to attack an enemy with guns, bombs, or rockets are described, along with armed reconnaissance aircraft, and those derived from fighter designs, providing a quick reference for each type. Along with famous mass-production types, like the Liberator, Mustang, and Hellcat, with their major modifications, all the little-known experimental projects are included and compared.Ray Wagner's definitive work arranges all those planes by their fighting purpose and appearance in history. Even by simply viewing their photographs page by page, the reader sees the story of combat plane design over the years. Below each picture are the vital facts of each type: the engine's name and power, how big and how heavy that plane is, as well as how fast, how high, and how far it can go.As the reader follows the text, he learns who made these planes and when. What could each plane do, how many were made, and where were they used? Why each combat plane was built is the most important question, and is best answered by placing each design in the historical context in which it was developed, from America's entrance into World War One in 1917 to Operation Allied Force in 1999.World War Two is the center focus, along with insights on aircraft involved with conflicts in Nicaragua, China, Spain, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. The bibliography indicates this history's primary sources and is a readers' guide to the many books and publications to expand your interests.

Freaky-Big Airplanes (World's Biggest) Review

Freaky-Big Airplanes (World's Biggest)

If you love airplanes of all sorts and you're idea of fun is going to an airport and watching them take off and land this is one book you're going to love. It all started in 1903 with Orville and Wilbur Wright when they "built the first engine-powered airplane that could fly." Airplanes have come a long way from that time. The are larger, carry passengers and can fly very long distances. For example, the Airbus A380 is the "biggest passenger plane in the world." It can hold an amazing 840 passengers . . . it's "freaky big!" Although the Airbus A380 is BIG, it isn't the largest. The largest aircraft is the Antonov An-225. It is 275 feet, 7 inches long. It can carry massive loads. For example it can carry the weight equivalent of "40 big elephants." Now that is really freaky!
In this book you can look at and learn a lot about some big freaky aircraft. How about the C-5 Galaxy. This plane transports military equipment around the world. It is so big it can carry "army trucks, helicopters, or small planes." The Airbus Beluga was once called the "Super Transporter," but the nickname Beluga stuck. It is also a large transport plane. The Boeing 747-400 was nicknamed the "jumbo jet." and can hold 420 passengers. It's tail alone is "taller than a six-story building." In this book you'll also get to take a look at a Boeing Dreamlifter, a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a B-52 Bomber, and a Water Bomber. You can take a peek at four more large aircrafts such as the Sikorsky Ch53E Super Stallion, the Boeing Delta 4-Heavy rocket, the Airship Ventures Zeppelin and a commercial satellite.
This book really is fun, freaky and sure to please the young airplane fanatic. Each section gives the dimensions of the planes, talks about its basic history and purpose and has some WOW photographs to pore over. This book is very well laid out and will fascinate even the most reluctant reader. In the back of the book is a picture glossary, an index, a bibliography, and additional recommended book and website resources (thorough Bearport). This book would be a nice stepping stone for a student to develop a report on aeronautics or simply a fun, freaky read!

Concorde (Airliner Color History) Review

Concorde (Airliner Color History)

The Airlife's Airliner series of books cover individual commercial aircraft types in an interesting, in-depth manner.
Each volume of this British series covers a unique commercial aircraft type from its design, production, entry into service, its usage by airlines, and in some cases eventual demise.
Each volume features plenty of color and black and white photographs of the subject aircraft along with a complete construction list (accurate to date of publication for aircraft types still being built).
This volume covers, unfortunately, almost the entire operational life of this amazing aircraft. The only successful SuperSonic passenger airliner (there was only one other - the Russian Tupolev Tu-144 (which actually flew first)) the Concorde has plied the skyways between London and Paris and New York City.
Always interesting and always able to draw a crowd of on-lookers, this elegent airliner is about to ffly its last flight as Airbus Industrie has declined to continue supporting the existing fleet of aircraft. Fortunately ... both Air France and British Airways have decided to donate all of the airframes to aviation museums located around the world ... so that future generations may marvel at what could have been the next revolution in commercial air travel.

This study of the famed supersonic commercial transport examines the history, design production and service of the Concorde, from the initial planning stages to the aircrafts first flight in 1975 and the tragic accident in France in July 2000. The story begins with a brief background of supersonic flight and a look at plans dating as far back as the 1950s for a commercial SST.

The Boeing Xf8b-1 Fighter: Last of the Line (Schiffer Military History) Review

The Boeing Xf8b-1 Fighter: Last of the Line (Schiffer Military History)

Superlatives come easy when describing Jared Zichek's tribute to the XF8B-1 fighter! Zichek's book is THE definitive history of Boeing's ill-fated giant. And it's largely a one-man tribute since Zichek not only wrote the book, he illustrated it as well. THE BOEING XF8B-1 FIGHTER: LAST OF THE LINE could stand as the benchmark against which other aircraft histories are judged. The research done is quite impressive as is the wealth of illustrations. Though I've been critical of Schiffer prices in the past, this book is worth every penny of its $59.95 price-tag. Zichek's goal was to rescue the XF8B-1 from obscurity and he's certainly done that in spades.
The XF8B-1 was Boeing's late-war attempt to get back into the Navy fighter business. Navy brass pretty much gave Boeing a blank check to design the aircraft. The result was the gargantuan XF8B-1, the only Navy fighter I know of that featured an internal bomb bay! Powered by a massive 3,000hp P&W radial driving counter-rotating propellers, Boeing's fighter was promoted as a triple-threat aircraft, capable of serving as an escort fighter, nightfighter, torpedo-bomber, dive-bomber, etc. Unfortunately the aircraft died a-borning, the oversized, overly-complex XF8B-1 being quickly cancelled since it offered inferior performance compared to types already in service in 1945. Only three protypes were built. Total cost for the XF8B-1 program was over eight million dollars!
Zichek does a bag-up job of chronicling the development and short life of the XF8B-1 in the first 44 pages of the book, which runs to 372 pages total. He then offers a series of appendices on proposed modifications and variants; general arrangement drawings, most of which Zichek drew himself; wind tunnel reports, photos and drawings; mock-up photos; construction photos; general photos; the XF8B-1 Service and Maintenance Manual(!) along with color profiles and artwork of the proposed variants, all done by the author.
You have to give Schiffer Publishing credit. I can't think of any other publisher IN THE WORLD who would have invested the time and money to publish this book. It's a great book. Yet realistically how many XF8B-1 fans are out there??
If you're interested in all things Boeing or rare aircraft, you'll want a copy of this book. I'd give it six stars if possible. It's everything an aircraft history book should be...and then some. Highly recommended.
