Rodney Stich, is one of the few aviation authors who really knows what he is talking about. He delves int the behing the behind the scenes problems that outher authors miss.A very knowelagable pilot, and great author. The only other author who comes close is Capt. Brian Power-Waters. Another author ,Wrenold Dodson ,wrote a book and stole Rodney Stich title. Not to be compared with Mr. Rodney Stich ,and his fine book.

Recent high-profile commercial aviation mishaps have stretched the National Transportation Safety Board's resources to the limit and are testing the agency's ability to unravel the sorts of complex failures that lead to tragic accidents. In recognizing the enormous challenges the NTSB faces, agency Chairman Jim Hall sought a critical examination of the NTSB's ability to investigate major transportation accidents, and in particular commercial aviation accidents. The results of that study are contained in this report, the most comprehensive examination of the workings of the NTSB in the 30-year history of the agency.Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, RAND used a variety of quantitative and qualitative research techniques to assess the NTSB's operations and processes. This research, conducted in RAND's Institute for Civil Justice, outlines recommendations aimed atEND

There is much to tell of Americas latest involvements abroad. We have been through alot and deserve to have all the relevant information brought into discussion.
Altough just an outsiders account, this book feeds to the listening mind information that is accessible but not currently being considered as we venture into a world now changed by our military policy.

'Power of Mischief' is an outsider's accounting of the individuals in government who promote war and conquest, in and out of public office, for the furtherance and consolidation of their monied empire; at the expense of our lives and the product of our sacrifices; to our country's detriment, and to the instability and insecurity of the entire world.

B-17 Bomber Pilot's Flight Operating Manual Review

B-17 Bomber Pilot's Flight Operating Manual

Here is one really fascinating read: how to fly the B-17 bomber. You may have read a lot of books about the Queen of the Skies, maybe seen the excellent documentary film and the sort-of-okay Hollywood film, but this book adds a whole new dimension in your understanding of this aircraft. You'll see the whole layout of the plane, including all the gunner's positions, bombardier's position, etc. I never could figure out how the bombardier was situated till I saw this book, really neat! Plus all the information you need to really speak like an expert about this plane. I sometimes work as a docent in Tucson at the Pima Air and Space Museum, and plan to bring this with me to work, as it will really help the staff understand the exact specifications of this amazing aircraft. Truly this is a great thing to have on your shelf if you're a WWII aircraft enthusiast!

Aloha Flight 243 Review

Aloha Flight 243
Average Reviews:

The Aloha Flight 243 accident is an incredible story - a 737 that loses a substantial part of it's body in midair, but incredibly, the crew manages to get the plane down without any additional fatalities (one was killed in the air).
Henry Arii provides us with some interesting detail into why the accident happened - an unsound design and a high cycle airframe. The book describes the technical detail behind the design, and why it was unsatisfactory.
The book is a little repetitive however - it's as if additional chapters are written for the book without regards for what has gone before - it can be a little frustrating.

Aloha Flight 243 by Henry S. Arii is an important book with an important message: the world\'s airways are not safe. This detailed narrative describes the infamous flight two decades ago, in which one flight attendant lost her life and an industry should have begun taking notice of a dangerous development and trend in air safety. Written matter-of-factly, and as straightforward as the clues from a black box, the maintenance investigator turned author provides a professional critique of the National Transportation Safety Board and their decision-making process during the investigation and hearing of the 1988 incident. With chapter titles like \'A Benevolent God" and \'Typical Lap Joint Cross Section of Rivet and Skin," this fully annotated and at times highly technical nonfiction transcends politics and bureaucratic hierarchies to show readers exactly what happened and how it was mishandled by authorities and how, if the status quo continues, more lives will be at risk.

Very nice book illustrating the development of the commuter/regional airplanes of the 1970's and 1980's and 1990's.

This title fills one of the few remaining gaps in Osprey's coverage of commercial aviation. Today hundreds of turboprop airliners connect major hubs with small airports in the US, Europe and Asia. Most big carriers, such as American Airlines and British Airways, operate subsidiaries equipped with the latest 14 to 70-seat commuters, including the ATR 72, Saab 2000/340, Boeing's Dash 7/8, Jetstream 41, Beech 1900, Fokker 50, Embraer Brazilia, Dornier 228, and more.

Profit Strategies for Air Transportation (Aviation Week Books) Review

Profit Strategies for Air Transportation (Aviation Week Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The title is misleading. I searched through every chapter to decipher how to make a profit with passenger, cargo, and/or other areas of air transportation. It covers a tremendous amount of information like aircraft configurations and technical designs. Unfortunately, and all so common, lots of problems given about aviation; but few solutions offered about profit strategies!
Each chapter technically covers an area of air transportation, but even the short chapters are not extensive enough. Only the most fundamental elements are written. There is not enough pertinent information delivered for the reader to absorb a firm understanding about air transportation.
The problem is that this 500 page book covers an awful lot of technical material. He selectively crammed it all into 500 pages. Some important elements are missing. The title of the book should be more concise about which audience the author wanted to attract, and spread all his great information into two brilliantly-written volumes.

B-29 Bomber Pilot's Flight Operating Manual Review

B-29 Bomber Pilot's Flight Operating Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This manual would be especially attractive to a pilot, retired or active. As a retired pilot I expected to find just what the name of the manual inferred, Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions.
Although I found the manual to be interesting, it sorely lacked information originally contained in these manuals, such a airplane flight characteristics, take off and landing procedures, and performance information, i.e., airplane and engine limitations, take off and landing distances, including climb, cruise and range data.
Had I have known of these deficient areas of information prior to ordering the manual, I would have by-passed the opportunity to purchase it.

The Boeing B-29 was one of the most sophisticated aircraft of WWII. It featured many innovations including guns that could be fired by remote control and pressurized crew compartments. It was also the heaviest production plane of the war with terrific range and bomb carrying capabilities. Carrying a crew of ten, the Superfortress devastated Japan in a series of gigantic raids in 1944-45. In the end it would be the B-29s "Enola Gay" and "Bock's Car" that dropped the atomic bombs and effectively ended the conflict. Originally printed by the United States Army Air Force in January of 1944, the B-29 Bomber Pilot's Flight Operating Manual taught pilots everything they needed to know about the "Superfort" Originally classified "Restricted", the manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted, and color images appear as black and white. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.

I teach engineering at a small middle school in Massachusetts. Seventh grade students spend the entire year learning about the different modes of transporation (water, air, space, land). Projects include steam boats, gliders, rockets, maglevs and mousetrap cars. I use the book for supplemental worksheets after students have completed their hands-on work for the day. The stories and worksheets help reinforce science and math principles that go into the engineering of their vehicles.

Island in the Sky: Building the International Space Station Review

Island in the Sky: Building the International Space Station
Average Reviews:

Since this book was published well before the launch of the first stage of the International Space Station, it is not the book for someone who wants to know the story of the ISS since its launch. Many things have happened that could not have been predicted. Other things that one might have guessed, such as delays, make the recent story very interesting but, of course, are not included in this book. What it does have is lots of wonderful pictures of satellites that came before and stories about how we got to the place where we could launch the ISS. If anyone is interested in the politics of NASA and JPL and the government and how they resolve their problems, this book has a lot of information: I don't know how accurate it is but its a good read, anyway.

Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy Review

Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book thinking it was about space technology. After all, there's a rocket on the cover and the title makes it sound as though it's about hardware. But this is in fact a political diatribe against U.S. military space policy and our foreign policy in general. It blames the U.S. for not only all evil on Earth, but most of it above. Now, I am myself a strong critic of much of out country's recent actions and the Bush administration, but this book is COMPLETELY one-sided and does not describe any "tools" at all. I actually threw it away after reading it, it was just that uninteresting.

The expansion of space militarization forms a common thread with the explicit unilateral empire-building of the Bush administration. But just as Star Wars did not begin with the Missile Defense Agency, preventive war theory did not originate with Donald Rumsfeld.Advocates of military space always were on the front line of those demanding global dominance. Loring Wirbel argues that the seeds for the current space supremacy doctrine were sown at the end of the Cold War, in the early days of the Clinton administration. Examining the evolution of space-based tools, Wirbel shows that missile defense strategy is part of a dangerous US move to wage endless preventive war and demand global supremacy over allies and adversaries alike.Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy provides a fresh look at the role of space as an enabler of the Bush administration’s plans for endless preventive war.It debunks the benign notions of missile defence, and expands the definition of space supremacy beyond that of weapons in space, to include the unilateral misuse of space-based intelligence, communications, and targeting technologies.

This book has good detail and coverage of the DC-9, MD-80, DC-10, and MD-11. However, there is not as much good detail on the very first DC-8s, especially the original turbojets. There also is not much detail on the MD-90. The text is generally good, although there are some factual inconsistencies. Overall, a pretty good book with some good pictures, but not a complete coverage of all Douglas types.

This biography brings to life the many struggles 'Dick' encountered on his way to success; and the power plays and politics of the corporate involvement regarding his test pilot's career. Not all of Dick's airplane incidents are mentioned, but his significant stories come to life such as: his fiery crash in the T-33; his ejection over Mount Whitney; his spin tests in the F-5's; and his final assignment in the 'black world' as chief project pilot on the highly classified Tacit Blue. From his early childhood in up-state New York, to the difficulties of growing up in a harsh environment, he overcame illness and injury. He kept his determination to do something special, be a test pilot. In his senior years, it describes the tragedy of his pallidotomy surgery for Parkinson's disease that left him disabled and brought about early dementia. To say 'Dick' was a controversial figure in the aerospace industry would be an understatement. To say 'Dick' made his mark and contributed to his aerospace world would be accurate. However, both of these statements would be true. How was he bold, daring and dashing? You will find those answers as you read about him.
